Boys Basketball Recreation

About Boys Basketball

The YAC Basketball Program has over 600 players participating in grades 2 through 12 in Yorktown Heights, NY.

Players are introduced to basketball through the Pee Wee Division for 2nd graders. The players participate in a clinic-like environment and scrimmage at the end of each session.

3rd and 4th graders play in the Bantam Division. They practice one night a week and play one game a week on Saturdays. The games are played with smaller basketballs (28.5") on regulation 10 ft. rims.

The Junior (5th - 6th Grade) and Senior (7th - 8th Grade) Divisions are comprised of 12 to 16 teams with 10 players per team. These divisions have player evaluations as well as a player draft that is usually conducted in late October or early November. Practices are held one weeknight each week and games are played once a week on Saturdays. Standings are kept and there are playoffs at the end of the year.

The High School Division is for players in grades 9 through 12. There is one game a week played on Sunday afternoon or evening and no practices.

The YAC also sponsors Travel Basketball teams for Grades 4 through 8. Teams play in the Tri-County Basketball League (TCBL) and / or other travel league in the area and play regular season games from November through March. Teams also participate in tournaments during the season, as well as year-end playoffs. Playing time on travel teams is up to each team's coach and playing time is not guaranteed to each player.

Inhouse Pee Wee 2nd grade Basketball

The Pee Wee program introduces 2nd graders to basketball in a clinic format.

The players attend one session each week on Saturday mornings and are taught the basics of dribbling and shooting through “fun” drills.

The players use a “child sized” basketball and play on 9-foot hoops.

The first half of the session is devoted to drills, while the second half is used for informal “games”.

The players are divided up into 4 teams each week, so two “games” can be played simultaneously.

Since there are no formal teams, the teams change from week to week.

The 2nd Grade (Pee Wee) Basketball Clinic begins in early December and runs through early March. It is a ten week program that will be held at Mohansic gym early on Saturday mornings.

Your child does NOT need to bring a basketball to this program.

Inhouse Bantam Division (3rd and 4th grades)

The Bantam program introduces 3rd and 4th graders to basketball in a team format.

Each player attends a short evaluation before the season, and is assigned to a team by the commissioner. This is done to ensure that teams are balanced.

Each team has a head coach and in some cases an assistant coach.

The players (8 to 10 per team) attend practice one weeknight each week where they are taught the basics of basketball (dribbling, shooting, defense, etc.).

One-hour games are played once a week on Saturdays.

The players use a 28.5" basketball, 10-foot hoops and play on full-courts at French Hill, Mohansic and Crompond Schools.

The games are intended to introduce the players to basketball, through the use of referees, but fouls are not kept.

In keeping with the instructional nature of the league, there are no playoffs in the Bantam Division.

  • It is important to remember that even if you played last year, and were on a team, that you register again this year during the normal registration period.
  • As Varsity Basketball team tryouts coincide with the YAC sign ups, players who are not sure they will make the Varsity, and want to be ensured of a spot on a YAC team, MUST register during the normal registration period. If you don't make Varsity, you will be placed on a team; if you make the Varsity, you will be given a full refund after notifying the commissioner.
    • Once registration is closed, and we have met the maximum allotted registration, a waiting list will be started and used ONLY to backfill positions as vacancies occur within the individual teams.
    • Once you are on a team you remain on that same team as long as you register every year.
    • For the remaining spots that are available, our criteria are as follows: Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen are chosen last...

Please register early!!!
