About Cheerleading

The YAC Cheer program is a great way to introduce the sport of Cheerleading. Cheerleading is a team sport that includes elements of dance, acrobatics and Cheer. Our program is offered to students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Throughout the season athletes will learn the following important life lessons:

TEAMWORK:  Cheerleading teaches athletes to work as one focused unit. If one person fails the whole team fails, but if one person succeeds the whole team succeeds. "There is no "i" in team."

TRUST: Cheerleading is all about trust! Athletes learn the responsibility of trust, what it means to lose it and what it takes to win it back. The flyers have to trust their bases to keep them in the air and to catch them when they fall. The bases have to trust that their flyers stay tight and light in the air and execute their skills with precision. They all have to trust their head spot to lead the stunt group and literally have their backs when something goes wrong. If there is no trust in each other, the stunts DO NOT work!

TIME MANAGEMENT: Cheerleading, like any other sport, is a major time commitment. Athletes have to learn how to juggle not only cheer but also school, family commitments, friends, and many other things that life throws at them. The difference between competitive cheerleading and other team sports is that every single team member plays a vital role to the success or failure of the team. If athletes don’t learn good time management skills, it can affect not only their team mates but also their cheerleading experience.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Being able to communicate effectively with others is a major component of cheerleading. All team members need to be able to talk to each other to execute their stunts and choreography. While stunts are taught to all groups with the same technique not every stunt group is the same. Some athletes are tall, some athletes are short, some groups have a different number of athletes performing a given stunt.  Communication to one another is key, both when stunts work and when they don’t work. Progress can only be made through effective communication. Cheerleading teaches athletes these important skills.
